A message from David van Oeveren

I will keep this epistle short.  We will not be worshipping in person this week, we will continue online in the manner we have been.

Over the next few days Alister, Tracey and I will work through the Diocesan Guidelines as to the ability to meet in person from next week onwards.  Please give us the time to work through whether we can provide the systems and the social distancing to do so.

As you read Bp. Andrew’s summary email below or delve deeper into the attached document you may have an opinion you wish to share with Alister, Tracey and I as we make decisions.  Please email the three of us with your thoughts.

A summary of things we will need to consider:

  • Online worship continues to remain a viable option in Delta Level 2 and is encouraged for all parishes
  • Pastoral care online or by phone continues to remain a viable option in Delta Level 2 and is encouraged
  • From 13 September 2021 onward congregations may gather for worship in churches once they have been cleaned and prepared in line with the guidelines
  • The limit for indoor gatherings is 50 people including worship, funerals and weddings
  • Masks are now mandatory at all gatherings for worship in our churches
  • We will not share in the Eucharist / Holy Communion in any form in public worship or home visits until further notice
  • Congregational and Choral / Music Group singing will not be allowed during the current level
  • The Diocesan Office and Parish Offices will open with some staff working in the office and some continuing to work from home
  • In all spaces we will maintain physical distancing and hygiene standards

Subject: Announcement COVID Delta Level 2 Waiapu Guidelines

E te whānau a te Karaiti,

Over the past two days the Episcopal Ministry Team have been working on a revision of the Waiapu COVID implementation guidelines to bring them into line with the new government guidelines regarding Delta Level 2. There have been some changes implemented under Delta Level 2 this year compared to last year under Level 2 to take into account the Delta variant. You will have already noticed this yourself with the increased use of masks in the community.

We have had to make some decisions about how we gather for worship in particular and these have been made in consultation with parishes and services across Waiapu and also with the Pakeha Bishops. The decisions we have made are based on preserving the safest environment possible for our most vulnerable in the community. As the government continues to develop the rules for Delta Level 2 we will keep these guidelines updated and you informed of any changes. We will also continue to monitor and review these guidelines as we gain more experience in Delta Level 2.

The guidelines are very detailed to assist clergy and laity in making full preparation for the use of premises and the conduct of services and gatherings within Delta Level 2.

The essential highlights for Delta Level 2:

  • Online worship continues to remain a viable option in Delta Level 2 and is encouraged for all parishes
  • Pastoral care online or by phone continues to remain a viable option in Delta Level 2 and is encouraged
  • Worship for Sunday 12 September 2021 will be online only.
  • From 13 September 2021 onward congregations may gather for worship in churches once they have been cleaned and prepared in line with the guidelines
  • The limit for indoor gatherings is 50 people including worship, funerals and weddings.
  • Masks are now mandatory at all gatherings for worship in our churches
  • We will not share in the Eucharist/Holy Communion in any form in public worship or home visits until further notice.
  • Congregational and Choral/Music Group singing will not be allowed during the current level.
  • Pastoral visiting in private homes, hospitals and rest homes is permissible within certain criteria
  • Clergy attending parishioners to offer the last rites is permissible within certain criteria
  • Op Shops can open and trade for business
  • The Diocesan Office and Parish Offices will open with some staff working in the office and some continuing to work from home
  • In all spaces we will maintain physical distancing and hygiene standards

As you read through the guidelines you may have questions for clarity. We have tried our best to be clear in the direction we are setting and much of this relates to a common sense application of the Government Guidelines. Questions for clarity may be directed through your Archdeacon. We encourage you to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as a safe way to protect yourself and others in the community against this virus.
